Summer is coming to a close now, and despite the rare heat wave we’re experiencing, soon we will need to pack away our sundresses and cut-off shorts. Goodbye beach days, and patio drinks. Hello to cozy knit sweaters and warm mugs of apple cider.
I’m not quite ready for that yet though, so to prepare myself to say goodbye I’ve curated a Summer 2019 playlist.
Although today is the first official day of fall, it still doesn’t quite feel like fall yet. Yesterday was 30 degrees Celsius (that’s 86 Fahrenheit), and today felt just as hot. Make no mistake though, these warm days are numbered. If you’re like me and want to hang on as long as you can this playlist might be just what you need before giving summer a send-off. When the fall weather really hits, summer may feel far from mind, but these tracks are sure to take you back.
This playlist is a collection of the songs that captured the many moods and memories of the summer. It includes some of the songs that were in heavy rotation for me, and a few of the biggest hits this year. Some are old, some are new. Many of them capture the essence of summer and spirit of the season in some way. Some are more upbeat and fun, others are more laid back. You’ll find party songs and pulsing rhythms on here, but also more easy going, reflective tracks, and moments of melancholy.
So whether you had a hot girl summer or a sad girl summer (or maybe a bit of both), there’s something here for you.
This list also reflects some of the defining moments and memories of the summer for me. Some pretty cool things happened this summer and I’ve chosen songs to pay tribute to those events. In Toronto we kicked off the summer with a historic championship win for The Raptors! Mafuzzy Style is the vibe and song of that time. The song – which was inspired by Raptor Serge Ibaka and his life philosophy – perfectly captures the celebratory mood the entire city, and country was in at the time. The post victory euphoria would soon wear off for us though when it was announced that our very own King of the North Kawhi Leonard would be leaving us for the Clippers. Many didn’t see it coming. We thought we had a good thing going on. Our hearts were shattered, we felt betrayed, and it sucked. “Arrow Through Me” is the diddy that pretty much sums up what we felt and represents the collective cries of the nation.
It was also the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival so you’ll notice a few songs from some of the artists who performed at the festival. A few weeks ago was the Full Harvest Moon on Friday the 13th, a special and rare occurrence that won’t happen for another 30 years!!!! Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” felt like a great song to mark the remembrance of that special night.
You’ll notice quite a few Lana Del Rey tracks on here. I’ve been listening to A LOT of Lana this summer while I eagerly awaited her newest album Norman Fucking Rockwell (which if you haven’t heard yet check it out it’s amazing.) Since the album’s been released it’s been on repeat. Lana Del Rey all day for me LOL! There are so many other tracks from that album that I could have put on this list, but I thought I’d cap the the Lana song count at 3.
So here we have it, a slice of the soundtrack to my summer. What would you put on your summer 2019 playlist? If at any time need a dose of summer and just want to be reminded of those sunny, carefree days, you can come back to this playlist, give these songs a listen and allow yourself to be transported back to that place.
